Bill Maher talking about the “Equality of Outcomes” for musicians.

I’m a fan of Bill Maher and regularly listen to the podcast of his HBO show “Real Time with Bill Maher” on my Saturday morning runs. I appreciate how he brings on political rivals, discusses uncomfortable topics, and calls out over-reaction to political correctness. However, I sometimes cringe when I hear him reduce complex ideas based on his narrow understanding of a broad topic.

A good example of this happened on this week’s show (Sunday, March 19, 2021) during his New Rules segment. He talked about the concept of “Equality of Outcomes” in which everyone is given equal treatment independent…

I just finished watching The Social Dilemma and it rocked me to my core. It is a documentary about societal problems and how they are exacerbated by social media: childhood depression, suicide, political polarization, radicalization, etc.

The film is told from the perspective of Silicon Valley tech insiders who had helped to design and develop services like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube. It also uses dramatic re-enactments to personify how a recommender system algorithm is designed to capture a user’s attention with sophisticated machine learning techniques not unlike the ones that I teach in some of my courses.

These recommender…

In the midst of this COVID- 19, the Localify team hopes everyone is taking care of themselves and their loved ones.

Due to the effects of this pandemic, including the mass cancellations of local music events, we have decided to take Localify offline. Localify’s mission is to bring you music recommendations that will entice you to experience these local artists at their live shows. It would be irresponsible to continue that mission during the pandemic. During this hibernation, our team is working remotely and collaborating on exciting new features to bring to our listeners.

Live shows may be canceled, but…

Throughout the last few months, COVID-19 has had an intimate and growing impact on lives and industries across the globe. The number of cases in the U.S. now surpasses 240,000, and people across the states are increasingly practicing social distancing to help prevent the spread of the disease. While self-isolation is a necessary and proven tactic to “ flatten the curve,” it also threatens industries that depend on in-person gatherings and live events, affecting many local musicians.

Across the nation, musicians have been forced to cancel and postpone a variety of musical events. The majority of touring artists have canceled…

Supporting local music is as important as supporting local business

“Buy local.” This is likely a phrase you’ve heard before. You might have seen it promoted in the storefront windows of small, independent businesses or heard it in passing at your neighborhood farmers market. You might have even seen it on a bumper sticker or on the label of your favorite local beer.

Throughout the last decade, the global presence of large corporations like Amazon has made it difficult for independent businesses to get the financial support they need, as they are often unable to compete with the cheap prices…

When I was six years old, my grandparents took me to a bluegrass concert in the park near their apartment. We packed a picnic and I wore my favorite sundress. I drank lemonade in the sticky July heat, humming to the tune of the banjo. I convinced my grandfather to dance with me and giggled with delight as he spun me around on the “dancefloor” — a patch of grass near the makeshift stage. …

Ithaca has a superb local music scene. I grew up here and spent a good part of my youth going to late-night shows, outdoor music festivals, and free shows in the public parks. More often then not, the music that was spinning on my trusty Discman was a CD that I had picked up at one of these live music events.

But when I went off to college and then moved to various cities, I found it hard to get into the various local music scenes. …

Community-oriented initiatives like Porchfest (and Localify.org) boost the visibility of local artists

It’s an exceptionally warm Sunday in September, and the central neighborhoods of Ithaca, NY are more lively than usual. Shirtless toddlers dance barefoot on the warm pavement as college students cheerfully sip iced coffee in the shade of nearby trees. Elderly couples lounge in lawn chairs and families parade down the streets, singing and dancing to live music. Around them, the entire neighborhood pulsates with the sweet, jubilant sounds of local performers.

This was Ithaca’s 13th annual Porchfest. Every year, homeowners in the city’s Fall…
